How to Prevent Dental Cavities and Keep the Teeth Healthy

Dental Cavities

Your pearly whites happen to be one of the most valuable assets that you have and that is not only because of the aesthetical reasons but also because they have a great impact on your overall health.

This is because if you are unable to chew your food properly or maintain the hygiene of your mouth, a number of diseases can result.

Though it is quite simple to maintain your oral health and hygiene, many people fail to achieve a great oral health.

This can have far-reaching consequences including tooth decay and cavities and ultimately loss of teeth. To prevent such conditions, you need to protect the teeth and your oral health.

Tooth decay happens when the enamel of the teeth gets softened and leads to the damage of the tooth structure. The acids which are created when sugar is broken down by the plaque bacteria, are the main culprits for this.

If the loss of mineral is left untreated, a hole in the tooth will be formed which is known as cavity. These holes get larger without treatment and can even destroy the whole teeth.

In order to prevent cavities, here are some tips that will also help to keep the teeth healthy. Just take a look.

  • Brush Twice a Day Regularly – You should brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for a couple of minutes. For improved care and if your time permits, you should also brush after every snack or meal. If you are unable to do so, just make sure you wash or rinse your mouth carefully every time you eat.

  • Floss Daily and Use a Mouthwash – Flossing daily will help to remove food debris from in between the teeth. Mouthwash also helps to remove microscopic bacteria from areas of the mouth that no brushing can reach. You should floss before bed and use mouthwash after brushing.

  • Eat Healthy – For maintaining good dental health, proper nutrition is essential. Limiting the sugary drinks and having nutritional snacks will assist in the prevention of plaque build-up in the mouth. So avoid the hard candies and other sugary snacks and drink lots of water throughout the day to maintain the pH level of the mouth.

  • Stop Smoking – Smoking is not only bad for the overall health but also incredibly bad for your oral health. It may cause staining of teeth within a very short span of time. Not only that, gum disease, bad breath, infection, decay, tooth loss and in certain cases even cancer can be caused by smoking. Your gums are especially at risk in this case as smoking leads to a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream. This makes it difficult for the gums that are infected to heal fast.

  • Have Sealants Placed – The dental sealants are a type of protective coating. These are placed on the surfaces of biting of the rear teeth. These teeth are then protected from developing a cavity as they are shielded against the bacteria and plaque by the sealants. These are most commonly used in children for protecting their permanent teeth. Nevertheless, even the adults can benefit from them.

  • Visit the Dentist Regularly – You should visit a proficient and experienced dentist whom you can find at the best dental clinic at least twice a year for complete oral check-up and professional teeth cleaning.

The above are some of the ways in which you can prevent dental cavities and retain your oral health and a million-dollar smile for years to come.
