As pet the latest census the population of the tiger count has witnessed a steady increase in numbers from 2006. The tiger count in India according to All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018-19 is 2,967 numbers.
The number have increased in Western Ghats and parts of Karnataka.
NTCA – National Tiger Conservation Authority has also confirmed in its report more than 80% of big cats were individually captured using camera traps capture technique.
The Tiger Count has gone up:-
- Due to increased vigilance and conservation efforts by the forest department.
- Working on poaching rackets activities and crushing them.
- Rehabilitation of villages from core areas which has more availability of space for Tigers.
- Advancement in tiger breed due to increased protection and patrolling.
The Global Tiger Forum, an international collaboration of tiger-bearing countries, has set a goal of doubling the count of wild tigers by 2022.
After the release of All India Tiger Estimation Report, 2018 our Prime Minister Mr. Modi said ‘India is one of the world’s biggest and secure habitats and it was decided in St. Petersburg that the target of doubling tiger population would be 2022, we achieved it 4 years in advance.’
More than 80% of the world’s tigers are in India, and its crucial to keep a track and trace of this animal.
India’s five tiger landscapes are Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains, Central Indian Landscape and Eastern Ghats, Western Ghats, Northeast Hills and Brahmaputra Plains and the Sundarbans.
States having most of the tigers are Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Maharashtra.
The tiger sits at the top of the food chain, and its conservation is important to ensure the well-being of the forest ecosystem.
