The Cigarette calculation: How much money does a smoker loose in his/her lifetime?

Everyone knows smoking isn’t good for the body. It not only affects you but also people around you as second-hand smoking tends to be deadlier than the former. Today’s post is all about giving you insight on how much money a smoker loses in her or her lifetime when approximately smoking 5 cigarettes a day.

Firstly, let us consider the fact that men and women have average life expectancies. The average female population lives longer than the male counterpart. Keeping that in mind, we can conclude a female smoker, who consumes at least 5 cigarettes a, spends more than the male.

A recent study concluded that a smoker (keeping both men and women in mind) spends at least 1 crore on cigarettes considering they start smoking at the age of 30 till the age of 60. The average costs of cigarettes in Delhi are around INR 10- INR 15. Now, if you smoke 5 cigarettes a day, you spend at least INR 50 to INR 75. Every month, our expenditure goes up to Rs. 1500 to 2250 and the average cost per year ranges between 18,000 to 27,000 bucks. That is a lot of money you could have saved to buy something else or place in your savings account for a rainy day.

The level of expenditure may actually increase as the Indian government is heavily taxing unhealthy products like tobacco and cigarettes. You can add up to 10- 15% extra on what has mentioned above. Studies suggest a smoker who has been smoking for 30 years at least has already spent over 24 lakhs. On top of that, consumers of tobacco and such products have higher risks of getting health issues and spend more on health check-ups and diagnostics. This adds at least 15% of the total expenditure to the list making the expenditure go up to 27.6 lakh.

If you smoke 10 a day, imagine what you’re spending. Such expenditures are often unnecessary spending that you could have saved on for something else. Not only are you burning a hole in your pockets but you’re also playing with your health. Now, it is up to you to decide what you want to do.
